Old furniture repair

Expert restoration and structural repair for aged wooden furniture, bringing timeless heirlooms back to life with artisanal precision.

Overview

Old furniture repair is the specialized craft of diagnosing, stabilizing, and reviving damaged or aging wooden furniture without destroying its original character, historic patina, or sentimental value. Over decades of daily use and exposure to Mumbai’s coastal humidity, solid wood tables, chairs, wardrobes, and sofas suffer from failed glues, wobbly joints, deep gouges, water rings, and termite incursions. Rather than discarding well-seasoned heirloom timber for flimsy modern particle board replacements, Vanshwood’s master restorers use traditional wood joinery, seamless timber splicing, and hand-rubbed finishes to restore pieces to pristine, rock-solid functionality.

Our old furniture repair services

1. Structural Joint & Frame Stabilization
  • Re-gluing and clamping wobbly dining chairs, loose mortise-and-tenon joints, cracked seat aprons, and rocking tables.
  • Reinforcing weakened structural junctions using internal hardwood dowels, floating tenons, and corner brace blocks.
2. Wood Refinishing & Scratch Removal
  • Eliminating deep surface scratches, steam-lifting wood dents, and removing unsightly white heat blush and moisture rings.
  • Hand-rubbed French polish (natural shellac) revival, organic beeswax buffing, and custom stain color matching.
3. Termite & Wood Borer Remediation
  • Chemical pressure injection to eradicate active wood-borer larvae and subterranean termites.
  • Excavating rotted wood sections and splicing in matching seasoned solid Burma teak using invisible interlocking wood joints.
4. Veneer, Inlay & Carving Repair
  • Re-adhering lifted or bubbled natural wood veneers, patching chipped edges, and color-blending seams.
  • Hand-chiseling replacement pieces for missing floral carvings, broken cabriole leg tips, and damaged decorative moldings.
5. Drawer Slide & Hardware Servicing
  • Rebuilding sticky, jammed, or sagging solid wood drawer runners and fitting custom hardwood slide tracks.
  • Restoring, polishing, and lubricating antique brass handles, escutcheon keyholes, and period mortise locksets.
6. Antique Heirloom Conservation
  • Museum-grade conservation for colonial, Victorian, and heritage family furniture handed down across generations.
  • Preserving the natural aged amber patina, avoiding aggressive sanding that destroys historical provenance.

Our step-by-step furniture restoration process

  • Step 1: On-Site Diagnosis & Timber Assessment: We inspect the wood species (teak, rosewood, oak), examine structural failure points, check moisture levels, and determine whether work can be performed on-site or in our workshop.
  • Step 2: Gentle Disassembly & Cleaning: Failing joints are gently separated using heat and moisture without cracking surrounding fibers, and brittle old adhesive is scraped clean to bare wood.
  • Step 3: Timber Splicing & Joint Re-bonding: Damaged tenons are rebuilt, missing timber is spliced with matching seasoned hardwood, and frames are clamped under uniform pressure with industrial wood glue.
  • Step 4: Surface Prep & Grain Blending: Imperfections are steamed, grain-filled, and finely sanded in stages to produce a baby-smooth surface ready for finishing.
  • Step 5: Hand-Rubbed Polishing & Curing: Multiple micro-coats of natural French polish or protective hardwax oil are applied, followed by hand-buffed beeswax to seal the wood grain against Mumbai humidity.

Why repair old solid wood furniture instead of buying new?

Most old wooden furniture was built from old-growth Burma Teak or Indian Rosewood—timber quality that is virtually impossible to find in modern mass-produced stores. Buying new furniture often means paying premium prices for compressed particle boards and paper laminates that break down in 3 to 5 years. Restoring your existing solid wood furniture preserves invaluable family memories, retains authentic hardwood value, and provides another 30 to 50+ years of dependable daily service.
